Henri Lefebvre thinks anything can have a rhythm including our bodies, ‘our biological rhythms of sleep, hunger and thirst, excretion and so on are more and more conditioned by the social environment and our working lives. We train ourselves, and are trained, to behave in a number of ways.’ Even cities can have rhythms for example the traffic lights have a sequence to follow. Noises in a city can be like a musical score. Everybody has their own individual rhythms. This relates to our performance as in our performance we are responding to sound. Originally we chose quite contemporary music for our performance to respond to however we realise now that we don’t have to use conventional styles of music to respond to we could even just use sounds like how the sounds of a city can make a musical score.

Erving Goffman: Presentation of self in everyday life
In Erving Goffman’s Presentation of self in everyday life he states, ‘in Ichheiser’s terms, the individual will have to act so that he intentionally or unintentionally expresses himself and the others will in turn have to be impressed in some way by him’. He thinks that we perform everyday in our everyday lives and people put on a ‘performance’ particularly in different social situations. For example, you would ‘perform’ differently to a friend as you would to your boss at work. In site specific performance some performers find it strange as they are used to performing in a conventional performance space, usually a theatre. However if we think about performance being an everyday occurrence and something we do constantly it shouldn’t actually feel that strange performing in an unconventional space.

expansion
After performing five minutes of our performance, we have decided to develop for next week, we could record ourselves doing our performance with the paint or glow sticks, so we will know early on if our idea works. We thought each person could have their own colour representing their ‘characters’ for example I responded to the music in a more sad way than angry way so I could go for a light blue to represent my character as in the dark you won’t see my facial expressions. As our original idea was reflection we could have both pairs responding in the same way to show reflection however we would prefer it to be a personal response so the audience can see how people respond differently to sound. Using the paint will bring in colour making it more visually entertaining and eventually the paint will outline the body and make a canvas. If we decide to do the performance in pairs the colours could mix together creating a colourful effect.
Pina Bausch
When thinking about our five minute performance, we knew it would be difficult as using UV lights and paint can be quite messy, so it is best kept for the performance. So we decided to think about the physicality as we will be performing movements in response to music. We got our idea from the drama exercise chair duets. We also looked at Pina Bausch to get inspiration for what kind of movements we could do, however we didn’t want it to be too rehearsed as it is an immediate response to music and sound. To also help with the movement we took the idea of having our partner trying to touch us in places we wouldn’t feel comfortable and then we would try and avoid them using movement but still responding to the music.
